Dieter W. Blum
- QTI
Group PRINCIPAL RESEARCHER
Mr.
Blum is self-taught and personally responsible for more than 50
issued and pending patents worldwide.
Although
he has been mainly involved in research concerning applied electrodynamics, and
has been designing and developing electronic and electromagnetic systems since
the age of 11, Mr. Blum has no formal degree.
In the early
1980’s, he pioneered Automatic Depth control for pneumatic seeders, Automatic
Height control for combines, and Automatic Draft control for tractors
(Versatile, Steiger, John Deere) and then went on to create a Patternless Lens
Edging system for the eyeglass industry (WECO, Coburn Optical, Nikon.) During
the latter half of the 1980’s he created novel speech compression and
multiplexing techniques for the telecom sector (SaskTel, Bell South) and
invented a novel TV commercial substitution and elimination system.
Through the
early 1990’s, he invented High-Resolution Video Velocimetry and an attendant
License-Plate Recognition system (RCMP Science Directorate), and his creation of
several Wireless Media Access controllers, Radio Frequency modems and Terminal
Node controllers (used by U.S. law enforcement agencies), as well as a
novel
Magnetostatic Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) system (Belt C.A.T.) providing for
virtual three-dimensional magnetic imaging to detect damage in high-tension
steel cord reinforced conveyor belting (which has been in
use
worldwide
since 1996, Bridgestone, Goodyear, Veyance, Belterra etc.), are indicative of the breadth of Mr.
Blum’s imagination.
Still in the
1990’s, he developed a CATV-based digital Video-On-Demand (VOD) system which was
sold to a US consortium that commercialized the system in conjunction with the
David Sarnoff Research Center (formerly RCA Laboratories and now a subsidiary of
SRI International) and this was followed by his invention of a novel PSTN-based
Video-On-Demand (VOD) content compression / transmission system for hotels and
large apartment buildings which allowed for delivery of VOD services via a
low-cost set-top. He also pioneered Autonomous Embedded Commutation for electric
traction drives and invented a novel Electrodynamic Intrusion Detection system.
Since 2000,
Mr. Blum developed a
Wireless Scroll Sign Display system (in use by Chevron Canada), invented a
Low-Voltage Distributed Hot Cathode Fluorescent Lamp controller, a High-Efficacy
Fluorescent Lamp Driver, and the next generation RMFI3D Steel Cord Conveyor Belt
Imaging System (for transverse SC Damage.)
He also
created a novel
Field Enhancement Sensor for Off-Body Scalp Potential EEG Sensing (Neil Squire
Foundation) and developed the novel REMO System2 Steel Cord Conveyor Belt
Longitudinal Damage Detection System (for Rip Damage.)
More recently,
his published research concerning “Lowering
the Work Function of a Photoemissive Electrode via Magnetostatic Bias”
was cited in
US Patent 6,891,174
to Axcelis Technologies, Inc., and
he also
successfully demonstrated (Nov/2007) a proof-of-concept
Superconducting Acyclic
Electromechanical Power Converter (US Navy, NRL, ONR) at the Center for
Electromechanics (CEM) at the University of Texas at Austin, and he created a
novel Electrostatic Dehumidification/Condensation system, as well as
a novel
Photosterilization & Pathogen Detection technique and a novel Ferrohydrodynamic
Forward Osmosis system.
Although his
research focus is on electromagnetic
power converter topologies, Mr. Blum has a long history of research and
development work involving electrodynamic interactions for electrodynamic
stimuli and non-invasive / non-destructive sensing / testing applications, as
well as remote sensing, high-speed signal acquisition, real-time signal
processing,
high-resolution
imaging,
image
processing and RF
data transmission techniques.
